“Working With NYWC Has Been A Moving Experience.”

Learn what it's like to be a summer support worker at North York Women's Centre in Toronto.

One of the core values of NYWC is empowering women, a mission that resonates deeply with Selma Ainab. As she took on the role of Women’s Support Worker for the summer, Selma was committed to making a meaningful impact in the lives of the women she supported.

”I wanted to join an organization where my work could have a positive impact,” says Selma. “I was drawn to NYWC because of their commitment to empowering women and addressing issues that affect them.”

Providing A Listening Ear For Toronto Women

During her time as a summer student, Selma played a key role in providing 1:1 support to service users and often served as the first point of contact for those reaching out by phone. She also assisted with resource finding and facilitated workshops for the Centre. These are just a few of the many roles Selma took on during her time at NYWC.

“I primarily worked directly with clients seeking support from the Centre,” explains Selma. “I provided a listening ear and helped address their needs through resource referrals tailored to their situations. Additionally, I engaged in community outreach and planned workshops, including a Healthy Relationships and Wellness Strategies Workshop.”

Providing Crucial Follow-ups To Women

After providing resources to women, Selma follows up with them to assess the effectiveness of the resource and offer additional support if needed. This follow-up is critical because it ensures that women receive the necessary assistance and feel supported throughout their journey.

“I particularly value following up with women after our interactions to hear how their situation is going,” says Selma. “This allows me to provide additional support if needed and celebrate success stories when our resource referrals prove beneficial!”

Applying Her Knowledge

Selma is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Population Health, a field that focuses on the social determinants of health. Her work at NYWC has been beneficial in expanding her understanding of this issue.

“Working at NYWC has given me firsthand insight into how factors such as housing, food insecurity, access to healthcare, and violence impact the overall health and well-being of individuals and communities,” says Selma. “It has been an eye-opening experience to see how the theoretical concepts I learned in the classroom translate into complex, real-life scenarios.”

Stay Open To Learning

This summer work opportunity has allowed Selma to grow significantly. She has consistently created a supportive and safe environment for the women at the Centre and has achieved her goal of making a positive impact on their lives.

“For anyone interested in a similar internship, my advice is be flexible and open to learning new things,” advises Selma. “You will need to conduct lots of research and stay updated on community resources. Also, it’s okay not to know everything—asking questions is part of the learning process. The NYWC team is incredibly supportive and always willing to teach and assist you!”
